Today the word is most often associated with the Tarot and the Destiny Matrix, but what stands behind it goes much further: the Arcana are the universal laws of the human psyche and of the universe, put into the language of images anyone can read.
Below is everything worth knowing about what the Arcana are, where they came from and how they work.
Destiny Matrix Numbers Explained: What do the numbers in the Destiny Matrix actually mean?
In the Destiny Matrix, numbers are not just math — they are cosmic codes, psychological blueprints, and energy frequencies. Based on the 22 Major Arcana, each number from 1 to 22 represents a specific archetype built into your subconscious.
Think of these numbers as your soul's DNA. They don't predict a rigid future; instead, they reveal your default settings, your hidden blockages, and your ultimate potential.
Where the Arcana came from: the story of their origin
The origin of the Arcana is wrapped in legend, and historians and esotericists still argue about where they really began. There are three main versions:
- The legend of Atlantis and Ancient Egypt (the mystical version)
The story goes that the priests of Ancient Egypt — or the surviving Atlanteans — foresaw the fall of their civilisation. To keep their sacred knowledge of the universe and of the human soul out of the hands of barbarians, they encoded it in symbolic pictures. Their reasoning was this: "Human vices are eternal. The surest way to preserve knowledge is to hand it over to those vices and turn it into a game of chance." That is how the deck appeared, with the Major Arcana standing for the journey of the soul. - The Italian Renaissance (the historical version)
The official history says that the forerunners of today's Arcana appeared in the first half of the fifteenth century in northern Italy. At the time it was an elite board game for the aristocracy called Tarocchi. The best-known deck of that time — the Visconti-Sforza Tarot of around 1450 — was painted by hand in gold and served as a lavish wedding present for the dukes of Milan. Nobody looked for magic in them then: they were allegorical pictures reflecting the spirit of the Renaissance. - French occultism of the eighteenth century (the birth of esoteric Tarot)
In 1781 the French freemason Antoine Court de Gébelin declared publicly for the first time that the Italian cards were the lost Egyptian Book of Thoth. From that moment the cards began to be studied intensively as a mystical instrument. The term "arcanum" was first applied to the cards by the French occultist Paul Christian in the nineteenth century. The real revolution came in 1909, when Arthur Edward Waite created the Rider-Waite Tarot, in which every card was given a deep astrological, kabbalistic and alchemical symbolism. Those are the Arcana we know today.
What kinds of Arcana there are
The traditional system divides the Arcana into two large groups (seventy-eight cards in the deck altogether):
- The Major Arcana — 22 cards. These are the key Arcana of the system. They are numbered from 0 to 22 and make up the Fool's Journey — the great stages of human development, from complete innocence (the Fool, 0), through the material and spiritual lessons, to harmony and wholeness (the World, 21). It is these twenty-two Arcana that are used in numerology and in the Destiny Matrix.
- The Minor Arcana — 56 cards. They fall into four suits (wands, cups, swords and pentacles) and describe the everyday, domestic, situational events of a life: money, quarrels, emotions, work.
Why does the Destiny Matrix count the Arcana from 1 to 22 and not from 0 to 22?
The reason lies in the strict mathematical logic of the Destiny Matrix method and in the rules of classical numerology.
When the creators of the method adapted the ancient system of twenty-two Major Arcana to calculations based on a date of birth, they ran into a purely technical problem: there is no zero in anyone's date of birth. You cannot be born on the 0th day or in the 0th month.
For the system to work, all twenty-two energies had to be tied to the real calendar. Here is exactly how it was done, and why the Magician is 1 while the Fool is 22:
1. Tying the Arcana to the days of the month
A calendar month runs to thirty-one days. In the Destiny Matrix every number above twenty-two is added together (someone born on the 23rd gets 2 + 3 = the 5th Arcanum; someone born on the 31st gets 3 + 1 = the 4th).
The largest base number a day of birth can produce without adding anything up is 22.
- A person born on the 1st automatically gets the 1st Arcanum (the Magician).
- A person born on the 22nd gets the 22nd Arcanum (the Fool).
Had the Fool stayed a zero, everyone born on the 22nd would simply have fallen out of the system, and the archetype of the Fool could not have been calculated at all.
2. Closing the circle of the life cycle (the Wheel of Samsara)
In the classic Tarot the journey of the soul is a straight line: the Fool (0) steps out of the void, walks through the Arcana and dissolves into the World (21).
In numerology and in the philosophy of the Destiny Matrix every process is cyclical (since the soul is born again and again). Moving the Fool to the twenty-second place turned that straight line into a perfect circle:
- The 1st Arcanum (the Magician) is the impulse, the beginning, the birth, the moment a person realises: "I exist, I have come into this world to act."
- Then come all the stages of a life — the lessons, the crises, the material goods and the spiritual side.
- The 21st Arcanum (the World) is the completion of the process, harmony reached at the current level, an expansion to the scale of the universe.
- The 22nd Arcanum (the Fool) is the point of absolute release, of being reset to zero, of moving onto the next turn of the spiral. The Fool closes the old cycle and at the same time prepares the soul for a new birth, where it will become the Magician (1) again, but at a higher spiritual level.
3. The Fool as a state of transition
In numerology twenty-two is considered a "Master Number" — the number of spiritual transcendence and of cosmic freedom. By moving the Fool from 0 to 22, the authors of the Matrix made the point that the Fool is not simply "an innocent with no experience", but a Soul that has been through all twenty-one lessons of earthly life, has gained the highest wisdom, has freed itself from every attachment and limitation, and is now ready to begin again with a completely light heart.
That is why the Magician kept the number 1, since he stands for the first step and the first day, while the Fool took the twenty-second position as the crown of freedom and the point of the great reset before a new start.
How the Arcana are connected to psychology
If you think the Arcana are purely fortune-telling magic, they are not. The great Swiss psychotherapist Carl Gustav Jung translated the Arcana into the language of academic science.
He noticed that the symbols on the cards (the Magician, the Emperor, the Hermit, Transformation, the Tower) are archetypes of the collective unconscious. They are the basic psychic programmes laid down in the unconscious of every person on Earth, regardless of culture or era. We all understand intuitively that the Emperor is power and structure, while the Lovers are choice and feeling. Jung used the Arcana in his sessions to help patients bring hidden problems up out of the unconscious.
Interesting facts about the Arcana
- Ordinary playing cards are the Arcana cut down. The familiar deck of thirty-six or fifty-two cards came from the Minor Arcana of the Tarot. Swords became spades, cups became hearts, wands became clubs and pentacles became diamonds. The Major Arcana disappeared from the playing deck, leaving behind a single card — the Fool (the joker).
- The Arcana in the Destiny Matrix. In the twenty-first century, where numerology meets psychology, the Destiny Matrix method appeared. It uses the twenty-two Major Arcana with no physical cards. Your date of birth is turned into Arcana codes that show your innate talents, your blocks around money, your karmic debts and your purpose.
- The symbolism is in the details. There is not a single accidental detail on the classic Arcana. The colour of the clothes, the direction of the gaze, the position of the hands, the mountains in the background, the phase of the moon — all of it is encoded symbolism that our unconscious reads directly.
- The energy in its positive and its negative state. An Arcanum is not a sentence and not a "good / bad" label. Every Arcanum is pure energy. The 11th Arcanum (Strength), in its positive state, gives a person phenomenal stamina and leadership; in its negative state it gives aggression and tyranny, or the opposite — complete laziness. It is the person who chooses how to live the archetype out.
The Three Septenaries (Cycles of Seven) of Arcana: Three Levels of Soul Evolution
If we set aside Arcana 22 (The Fool) as a master code of cosmic freedom, the remaining 21 Arcana divide perfectly into three groups of 7. These represent the three main stages of human development:
- The First Septenary (Arcana 1 to 7) — The Social Level (The Earthly Path): This stage is all about the evolution of the ego. Here, a person learns the fundamentals of life: self-awareness (1 The Magician), navigating relationships with the mother (3 The Empress) and the father (4 The Emperor), absorbing societal rules (5 The Hierophant), and driving toward their first social victories (7 The Chariot).
- The Second Septenary (Arcana 8 to 14) — The Spiritual Level (The Inward Journey): At this stage, a person shifts their focus from external glamor to the inner self. They grasp the laws of karma (8 Justice), seek wisdom in solitude (9 The Hermit), learn to ride the wave of synchronous luck (10 The Wheel of Fortune), build inner resilience (11 Strength), and navigate deep crises and re-evaluations of values (12 The Hanged Man, 13 Transformation, 14 Temperance).
- The Third Septenary (Arcana 15 to 21) — The Cosmic Level (The Superconscious): This is a breakthrough beyond ordinary human experience. A person confronts their darkest shadow sides (15 Temptation), witnesses the total collapse of old ego-illusions (16 The Tower), and subsequently discovers their divine spark by passing through the brilliance of 17 The Star, the mystique of 18 The Moon, the abundance of 19 The Sun, the rebirth of Ancestral lineage (20 Judgment), ultimately achieving absolute oneness with the Universe (21 The World).
Arcana Classification by Energy Type: Yang, Yin, and Neutral
All 22 Arcana are clearly structured based on the directional vector of their power:
- Masculine Energies (Yang) — Activity and Expansion: These are the Arcana of action, structure, logic, and outward momentum: 1, 4, 5, 7, 11, 16, 19. Individuals with these energies in key points of their matrix are natural-born leaders, builders, drivers of change, and protectors.
- Feminine Energies (Yin) — Passivity and Reception: These are the Arcana of intuition, flow, contemplation, comfort, and mysteries: 2, 3, 6, 9, 12, 14, 17, 18. These energies operate through magnetism — instead of chasing opportunities, they gently attract them into their lives.
- Karmic / Neutral Energies (Transcendent) — Transformation and Universal Law: These Arcana transcend the masculine-feminine duality, representing global turning points of destiny: 8, 10, 13, 15, 20, 21, 22. They require adaptability, the ability to let go of control, and absolute trust in the grand processes of the universe.
The main secret of the Arcana: the "Mirror" method, or the "Yin-Yang" principle (Plus/positive [+] and [-] Minus/negative)
Beginners often take fright when they see the "frightening" Arcana in their matrix — 13 (Transformation), 15 (Temptation) or 16 (The Tower), for example. They think: "That's it, this is a sentence, my fate is a bad one."
Remember rule number one: there is no such thing as a bad Arcanum.
Every Arcanum is not a fixed set of qualities but a scale of energy with two poles:
- "The plus / positive [+]" is how the Arcanum works when you are relaxed, honest with yourself, growing and living in harmony. This is your superpower and your source of money.
- "The minus / negative [-]" is where the Arcanum goes during stress, fear, laziness or resentment. These are your "karmic pitfalls" — the Arcanum shows up as your toxic traits, your fears and your blocks
An example: the lavish 15th Arcanum (Temptation) in its positive state gives a person insane wealth, charisma and the ability to see straight through a business niche. In its negative state that very same Arcanum turns a person into a domestic tyrant and a jealous paranoiac, buried in debt and spying on their partner. Your task is to notice which way the pendulum has swung and consciously move it into a positive state.
This structural harmony proves that the Arcana are a flawless, mathematically precise system of self-knowledge.
The main thing to remember:
The Arcana are not magic, not a prediction of your fate and not fortune-telling. They are a mirror of your own unconscious and a guide through your life. By studying the Arcana (in the Tarot or in the Destiny Matrix), a person starts to understand their hidden motives better, learns to stop repeating the same karmic mistakes, and takes conscious charge of what they do.
